MEET THE ARTIST

Artist Statement

I consider myself a craftsperson. I work with all sorts of mediums (cotton fabrics, graphite, and ceramics just to name a few) in order to create both 3D and 2D pieces that explore negative and positive space, and the personal relationship a viewer has with what they recognize in my art. Much of my work is representational of real-world objects, including a wide range of everyday tools such as keys, utensils, and most often toys. I manage my anxieties on a daily basis, and I create art in order to navigate the world and find peace. Each creation feels as though it was a piece taken out of my mind. My artistic process has always been very “go-with-the-flow,” and when I begin with an idea, it is always subject to change. I often have to retry many times with my work to achieve the result I want, and I am always looking for new materials that suit my needs per-project. I want viewers to associate my work with some of their own childhood experiences, their memories, and I want to always keep viewers curious about what they’re looking at. I always feel a sense of pride when someone relates my work to the iSpy books, which is something I've heard a lot, because I’ve always felt that the photographs of Walter Wick capture entire universes in a single shot, and that is part of what I want to accomplish in my own work. I want stories to be seen within the shapes and the space created around them, and I encourage my audience to take a closer look at every detail they see.

Outside of art, I often spend my time either outdoors, weightlifting, or taking care of my family at home. I always enjoy trying new experiences, and I find fulfillment in playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends, physically challenging myself, and being a good barista. Other hobbies of mine include: playing video games, sudoku, collecting, reading, mancala, and many more!
